How do I know if I have seasonal affective disorder (SAD)?

Living with SAD can be manageable. In addition to talking about it, keep in regular contact with people who can help you – family, friends, colleagues or a counsellor. This is the first step to looking after yourself during the winter months, especially if you are feeling depressed, stressed or sad.

Coping with SAD is not just about managing your emotions and thoughts, it is also important to think about your body and health. Make sure you get plenty of sleep and exercise. And give yourself the chance to feel better by eating healthy and drinking plenty of water.

Lastly, whenever you feel depressed, stressed or the symptoms of SAD, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself two questions. What can you do to feel better? What is one thing I am grateful for?

If you still feel it is difficult to cope with SAD or would like to talk about how you feel, contact your therapist today. It is important to understand the difference between needing help coping with depression, SAD or issues in your relationship needing couples therapy.
